What is Postpartum Belly Binding
Belly binding is one technique that can help facilitate postpartum healing after childbirth. Just as it sounds, the practice refers to wrapping or splinting your abdomen. Wrapping refers to using a long piece of fabric or wrap to support your core.
BODY CHANGES DURING PREGNANCY
For nine months, your body makes changed, During pregnancy, your body releases different hormones—such as relaxin—that help your ligaments and muscles soften in preparation for childbirth.
Your abdominal muscles are joined by a connective tissue that runs vertically from the sternum to the pubic bone. This tissue stretches and weakens as your uterus grows. Most of the postpartum mother will experience some stretching in their abdomen.
THE BENEFITS OF BELLY BINDING
Belly binding is a centuries-old tradition that spans many cultures. Binding can help the uterus shrink and the compression from the wrap aids in flushing out postpartum bleeding and stabilizes loosened ligaments. Also relieves water and air retention and support the pelvis floor assists proper posture.
WHEN CAN YOU START
For vaginal births: You can start binding during the first week of postpartum. Usually 2-3 days after delivery. It is recommended by JYS beautician to start between 2 weeks postpartum.
For cesarean births: After a cesarean birth it is not recommended to start until after your incision has healed or stitches have been removed, and your Doctor or health consultant clears you for wrapping. Typically this is somewhere between 4-6 weeks postpartum.
Belly binding is most effective during the first 8 weeks postpartum but can be useful for support after that time frame. It's never too late to start binding! It seems to be most effective when done on a daily basis of 8-12 hours a day for about 40 days. You can certainly choose to do it for shorter periods of time, but there is no need to exceed 12 hours a day. Your body needs time to breathe and relax without the wrap in place.
